What we do
"At Taylors of Harrogate, we like to do things properly. We don't see the point in cutting corners on the way we do things or skimping on quality."
Imagine tasting 1000 brews a day
How many cups of tea do you have a day? Three? Six? Ten? More? Well, our tea buying team taste anything up to 1000 every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. That’s a serious amount of tea. Obviously, they don’t have a mug of each, but they do taste every single one and use their carefully trained palates to analyse and judge each tea. Every day, new tea samples are delivered and there’s a whole team dedicated to preparing each one precisely to the tasters’ requirements. It’s quite a sight!
If a tea’s worth brewing...
At Taylors of Harrogate, we like to do things properly. We don’t see the point in cutting corners on the way we do things or skimping on quality. That’s short term thinking. We do whatever we can to ensure that everything we produce makes you smile and confirms you made the right choice. To be honest, we do it as much for our benefit as for yours! We simply couldn’t stand to make something we didn’t feel proud of. One taste and we think you’ll know exactly what we mean.
You only get what you put in
Our recipe may be a secret, but what we can reveal is that to make a quality brew, you have to buy top quality tea. Take Yorkshire Gold, our ‘best ever’ brew. It’s a bright, luxurious cup with a smooth malty flavour that comes from a blend of teas from the top ten tea gardens in the world, particularly those in Assam, Kenya and Rwanda. Then there’s Yorkshire Tea Decaffeinated: because decaffeination strips a lot of flavour from tea, by putting better quality tea in at the start, it stands up to the process. So you get a brew that tastes as good as normal tea - one that’s won two Great Taste Awards, in fact.
Eight times tested
"Every time you sip a cup of Yorkshire Tea, you might find it surprising to know that it's actually been tasted eight times before you."
Every time you sip a cup of Yorkshire Tea, you might find it surprising to know that it’s actually been tasted eight times before you. Quality control is a bit of an obsession of ours. To ensure you get a proper brew every time, each pack is ‘eight times tasted’ from the harvest to the auction room, pre-shipment and landed samples to pre and post production. When testing, our tea tasters don’t just sip genteely - they use special spoons and noisily slurp. This ensures plenty of oxygen mixes with the tea before it passes over their taste receptors so they get the full flavour.
Hip to be square
You’ve got to put great quality tea into a teabag to get great flavour out. We don’t muck around with funny shaped bags because it’s the tea that’s inside that makes the difference between a proper brew and a disappointing one. We’ll stick with filling traditional square tea bags with quality tea, thank you very much, and leave teabag fads to the rest.
